The Paradoxical Theory of Change
“Change occurs when one becomes what he is, not when he tries to become what he is not” (Beisser, 1970)
Healing is becoming. But we can only change to the extent that we sink into full awareness of our wounds. When we try to move too quickly from here to there, we miss the poignancy of our suffering, our transformation remains superficial.
In Gestalt Therapy we deliberately curate awareness;
of the emotions held in bodies,
of feelings in the rise and fall of breath,
of meaning in narratives,
and in the ebb and flow of energy in relationships.
When we try to change from the surface, the change stays thin; but when awareness is cultivated to its full depth it becomes its own kind of medicine
